IBKR Student Trading Lab

Your students can learn only so much from a textbook. Give them real-world trading experience by joining the IBKR Student Trading Lab.

The IBKR Student Trading Lab is a partnership between Interactive Brokers and educators to use our trading platform in financial, computer science, business and other applicable classes.

By joining this program, educators and their students enjoy the following benefits:

  • Your students gain valuable experience trading forex and US stocks, options, and fixed income using real-time market data.
  • The program is free.
  • Our paper trading accounts let student traders use the full range of our trading facilities in a simulated environment to learn how to apply trading strategies and learn risk management skills.
  • Over 600 colleges and high schools in over 60 countries, including some of the top financial engineering schools, already participate, making this one of the most popular programs of its kind.
  • Our market maker-designed trading platform, Trader Workstation, is already used in several large trading competitions.

This program is open to college and high school educators all over the world, but requires the sponsoring instructor to apply for the student accounts and supervise the project within the program guidelines.

Trading Curricula

Educators can create assignments and projects for students based on real trading experience on our platform.
  • Tailor the content to specific classes. For example, Finance and Trading students can study and practice using the order types and algos, Market Scanners and Fundamental Analysis features built into our platform.
  • Get started with our sample assignments and build your own assignments for specific classes.
  • Our free webinars enhance your students' learning.
  • Integrate short videos, tours and interactive courses available at our Traders' University into your lesson plan.

Paper Trading

Students use IBKR's Paper Trading accounts during the course of the academic year to work on financial technology or investment strategies assignments and projects, and will gain an in-depth understanding of the dynamics of the U.S. financial markets as well as forex trading.

Paper Trading accounts allow student traders to use the full range of IBKR trading facilities in a simulated environment:

  • Use powerful features such as order types and algos without risk.
  • Learn market dynamics covering exchanges and new products.
  • Simulate and test trading strategies.
  • Program trading applications and test them through the TWS Application Program Interface (APIs).
  • Run statements and other reports to manage and evaluate student account portfolios.
All students start with USD 1,000,000 of paper trading equity, and this equity reflects their trading activity as if the trades had executed in the real market. Students can reset their paper trading equity at any time in Account Management.
